The easiest way to get involved as an Innis student is to just come out to our events (bookmark our calendar to stay up-to-date)! You can also host your own events, get involved as an IRC member, and/or participate in the numerous committees and clubs at the Residence.
Suite events are short events that you hold with your suitemates. They are a great way to meet other residents and have a lot of fun. Plus, they look great on your reapplication to the Residence! Each suite that holds an event gets a budget of $30 from the IRC for event supplies.
The events that tend to work best are focused around an activity, rather than just giving out food. For example: you could play dodgeball, or host a movie night in conjunction with the Innis Film Club. Use your imagination, as there are prizes for the best suite events!
To host a suite event, talk to your Senior House Rep. They can give you feedback on your idea, help you to improve upon it, and will authorize the event to make sure you get reimbursed. Your Senior House Reps are also responsible for approving your posters to put up around the building so that people know about your event. Also, feel free to advertise your event on our events calendar.
On the last Sunday of every month, the IRC holds House Olympics. House Olympics is an event at which you come together with your house and compete against the other houses in the building. Previous House Olympic events have included: Cardio Pictionary, Dodgeball, Photo Scavenger Hunt, Trivial Pursuit, Rambunctious Relay Race, Musical Chairs, Iron Chef, and Whose Line is it Anyway?.
House Points are awarded to the winning house. At the end of the year, the house with the most house points wins the House Cup.
While House Olympics is the main way to win House Points, there will be opportunities to win House Points at other events throughout the year.
The IRC has 4 permanent committees: the Electronics Communication Committee (ECC); the Yearbook Committee; the Environmental Committee; and the Community Outreach Committee. Each committee has 2 co-chairs – one chosen in the spring, and one chosen in the fall. Committees are a great way to meet people with similar interests, be involved, and impact the Innis, U of T, and Toronto communities.
The ECC is responsible for technology at all IRC events. Each year, they host two Open Mic Nights to let all Innis Residents display their talents and passions!
The Yearbook Committee creates either a print or a digital yearbook to celebrate all of the events and residents for the current year. Yearbooks generally go on sale around the end of March.
The Environmental Committee creates awareness about environmental issues throughout the Residence. This past year, they ran a very successful Lights Out Challenge, which had suites compete to ensure that all lights were out in common areas after everyone went to bed.
The Community Outreach Committee aims to involve residents in the Toronto community through volunteering. It’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals and have a positive impact at the same time!
